The Phantom Ranger is a fictional character from the Power Rangers universe. He appeared first in the television series
Power Rangers: Turbo, and also appeared in Power Rangers in Space.
Character history
In Power Rangers: Turbo
Little is revealed about the Phantom Ranger throughout the series. Indeed, the name 'Phantom Ranger' is given to him by
the Turbo Power Rangers because of his ability to become invisible, like a phantom, and also his armour, which loosely resembles
the armour worn by the other Rangers. It is not made clear from where his power originates (for example, it is unknown whether
his armor is his actual body), though his armor is powered by the ruby in his chestplate. The Phantom Ranger is from the planet
Eltar, which is also the home planet of Zordon. His Zord is Artillatron, a massive vehicle that appears to be a combination
of a tank and an 18-wheeler. His weapon is the Phantom Laser, a black bat-shaped laser weapon which fires black energy beams.
Phantom Ranger provided the other Power Rangers with advanced zords to battle evil. The first instance of this was his
gift of the Rescue Zords to the Rangers, after the Turbozords were captured by General Havoc.
The Phantom Ranger was also the love interest of Cassie Chan, although since she knew little to nothing about him, it
is most often considered little more than a crush. Despite this, the Phantom Ranger displayed his own affection for Cassie
on certain occasions as well. He later left Earth believing it to be safe with the Power Rangers as its protectors.
In Power Rangers in Space
He was later searching for Zordon after he was captured. After the Space Rangers found him, he gave Andros, the Red Space
Ranger, a special CD which would unlock the control over the Delta Megazord in Power Rangers in Space.
In the finale of Power Rangers: In Space, Countdown to Destruction, the Phantom Ranger fought alongside the Blue Senturion
in defence of the planet Eltar.
To this day, the Phantom Ranger stands as the only ranger whose true name, race, species and identity are a mystery.
In both series, the Phantom Ranger was voiced by Alex Dodd.
Notes
* Phantom Ranger's identity has yet to be revealed, although there was plenty of speculation, including one of Phantom
Ranger being Zordon's son. It is rumored that in the original cut of Countdown to Destruction the Phantom's identity is revealed,
however executive producer Jonathan Tzachor ordered the episode cut down from three parts to two. There were plans to bring
Phantom Ranger onto Power Rangers: Lost Galaxy at some point, but Tzachor once again didn't allow them to come to fruition.
* During The Delta Discovery, it is revealed that Phantom Ranger is likely to be an android or at least a cyborg.
In a jungle-type planet, Phantom Ranger suffered a near mortal wound at the hands of Ecliptor while trying to inform the Space
Rangers of where Zordon is being held. The Space Rangers come to Phantom's aid and they do battle with Divatox while the Pink
Ranger stays to favor Phantom Ranger. Phantom Ranger covers a wound on his torso with his hand and assures the Pink Ranger
that he is okay and tells Pink Ranger to join the others. After Pink Ranger leaves, Phantom Ranger collapses, revealing circuitry
and wires in his wound. (Although it could just be part of his suit.) The Delta Discovery also marks the only episode to credit
Alex Dodd for doing the Phantom Ranger's voice. Until further notice, Mackenzie Hartford, the Operation Overdrive Red Ranger,
is the first non-biological Ranger.
* In Power Rangers: Turbo's Super Sentai counterpart, Gekisou Sentai Carranger, Phantom Ranger's Japanese equivalent
of the "VRV Master" was actually a very minor character and not a ranger at all. This marks the only time in which
a non-Ranger Sentai character has been designated as a Ranger in Power Rangers.
